What Is GrandpaSpy Junior?
Learning Through Spy Missions
GrandpaSpy Junior is an interactive experience primarily designed for children aged 8–12.
Children solve puzzles, crack codes, examine scenes, find hidden details, complete missions and test their judgement.
The spy theme makes those activities exciting, but the underlying skills are useful far beyond the world of spies.
Thinking, Not Just Playing
The aim is to encourage children to look carefully, think critically, recognise patterns, use evidence and explain how they reached a conclusion.
Missions are designed to reward curiosity, persistence and good judgement rather than speed or competition.
Five Core Skills
GrandpaSpy Junior activities are built around five areas of development.
Privacy by Design
Children Don't Need to Tell Us Who They Are
A child does not need to create an account to use the core GrandpaSpy Junior experience.
We do not require Junior users to submit their name, email address, date of birth, photograph, school or precise location in order to take part in missions and activities.
A Self-Contained Junior Environment
GrandpaSpy Junior is designed as a self-contained experience.
Junior missions and activities do not contain links that take children to external websites, social media platforms, online shops, advertisers or other third-party services.
Children therefore remain within the GrandpaSpy Junior environment while completing missions and activities.
Progress, Badges & Browser Storage
Progress Without a Child Account
GrandpaSpy Junior may remember things such as completed missions, badges, settings and accessibility preferences using storage within the browser or device.
This allows the experience to remember progress without requiring a child to create a personal GrandpaSpy account.
Because this information may be stored locally, clearing the browser's website data may also remove saved mission progress, badges and preferences.
Our Privacy Notice and Cookie Notice explain the website technologies used across GrandpaSpy in more detail.
Communication & Social Features
No Private Messaging
GrandpaSpy Junior does not provide direct messaging, chat rooms, private messages, child-to-child communication or public comments.
A child cannot use the Junior experience to contact another user or a stranger.
No Public Profiles or Uploads
Junior users do not create public profiles.
Children are not asked to upload photographs, videos or other personal material for public display.
Artificial Intelligence
No Open-Ended AI Chat
GrandpaSpy Junior does not provide an open-ended AI chatbot through which a child can hold private conversations or freely enter personal information.
Junior missions are designed experiences with defined interactions, challenges and responses rather than unrestricted conversations with an AI system.
Real-World Safety
Think Like a Spy. Don't Behave Like One.
The spy theme is used to make observation, problem-solving, reasoning and judgement exciting.
GrandpaSpy Junior does not encourage children to behave like real intelligence officers or conduct real surveillance.
- follow strangers
- enter private property
- secretly photograph people
- interfere with another person's belongings
- arrange to meet strangers
- put themselves or anyone else in danger
- keep unsafe secrets from parents, carers or trusted adults
A GrandpaSpy mission should stay a game.
If an activity inspires a child to try something away from the screen, normal family rules and appropriate adult supervision continue to apply.
Advertising & Commercial Partners
Junior Comes First
The wider GrandpaSpy project may work with commercial partners.
GrandpaSpy Junior does not contain clickable sponsor links, shopping links or calls to purchase.
Junior users will not be required to buy something, ask a parent to buy something, provide personal information or interact with advertising in order to complete a mission or progress.
GrandpaSpy Junior is not designed around profiling children for behavioural advertising.
Accessibility & Inclusive Design
Dyslexia Reading Mode
GrandpaSpy Junior is designed to include a dedicated Dyslexia Reading Mode.
The aim is to improve readability through clearer typography, increased spacing, left-aligned text and reduced visual clutter while preserving the GrandpaSpy experience.
Reduced Motion
GrandpaSpy Junior is designed to include a Reduced Motion option for users who prefer fewer animated interface effects.
Important information and functionality should not depend on animation alone.
Safeguarding & Editorial Standards
Designed With Children in Mind
GrandpaSpy Junior is designed with children's safeguarding in mind.
Junior content is checked before publication, and the experience is deliberately designed without private child-to-child communication, public uploads or open messaging.
We aim to follow established child-focused editorial and safeguarding principles when developing content for younger users.
If you believe any GrandpaSpy Junior activity is inappropriate, unclear or could create a safety concern, we want you to tell us.
Your Role
Explore It Together
GrandpaSpy Junior is designed so children can explore independently, but we actively encourage parents and carers to take an interest in what they are doing.
A mission can be a useful starting point for conversations about observation, evidence, privacy, misinformation, trust and judgement.
Website Technology
Cookies, Security & Technical Data
GrandpaSpy Junior does not ask children to identify themselves in order to complete its core activities.
However, like other websites, the wider GrandpaSpy website and the technology used to deliver it may process limited technical information needed for operation, security or website functionality.
Browser storage may also be used to remember Junior mission progress, badges, settings and accessibility preferences.
Our Privacy Notice and Cookie Notice provide the detailed information about the technologies used across the website and how information is handled.
