GrandpaSpy Junior Safety
A safe place to learn, play, solve puzzles, crack codes and think like a spy.
Your First Rule as a Secret Agent
You do not need to tell GrandpaSpy:
- your real name
- where you live
- what school you go to
- your phone number
- your email address
- your date of birth
- where you are
- or anything else that identifies you
You do not need to create an account to complete GrandpaSpy Junior missions.
There is no public profile and other Junior agents cannot contact you through GrandpaSpy Junior.
If anything online ever makes you worried, confused or uncomfortable, tell a parent, carer, teacher or another adult you trust.
Our Approach to Children's Safety
GrandpaSpy Junior is designed primarily for children aged 8–12.
It is a place to solve puzzles, practise observation, crack codes, complete missions and develop skills including reasoning, judgement and communication.
The Junior experience has been designed to minimise the amount of information children need to provide and to make privacy and safety part of the design of the service itself.
Privacy & Protection
No Junior Accounts
Children do not need to register or create a GrandpaSpy Junior account.
We do not require a child's name, username, email address or password in order for them to use the core Junior experience.
No Messaging or Social Features
GrandpaSpy Junior does not provide children with direct messaging, chat rooms, public comments, child-to-child messaging or public profiles.
Junior users cannot use GrandpaSpy Junior to contact strangers or other users.
No Photographs or Public Uploads
Junior users are not asked to upload photographs, videos, documents or other material for public display.
No Location Requests
GrandpaSpy Junior does not ask children to provide their home address, school or precise location as part of its missions and activities.
No Behavioural Advertising
GrandpaSpy Junior is not designed around profiling children for behavioural advertising.
We do not want children's activity in the Junior area used to build advertising profiles about them.
No Open AI Chat
GrandpaSpy Junior does not provide an open-ended AI chatbot through which children can enter personal information or hold private conversations with an AI system.
Missions and activities are designed experiences rather than unrestricted conversations.
A Self-Contained Junior Experience
GrandpaSpy Junior is designed as a closed, self-contained experience.
Junior missions and activities do not contain links that take children to external websites, social media platforms, online shops, advertisers or other third-party services.
Children therefore remain within the GrandpaSpy Junior environment while taking part in missions and activities.
Progress & Badges
Progress Stays With the Device
Some GrandpaSpy Junior activities may remember completed missions, progress, settings or earned badges on the device being used.
Where browser storage is used for these features, the intention is for that information to remain associated with the browser or device rather than requiring a child account on GrandpaSpy's servers.
Clearing a browser's website data may therefore also clear locally stored mission progress, preferences and badges.
Age-Appropriate Design
Designed for Ages 8–12
GrandpaSpy Junior is primarily designed for children aged 8–12.
We aim to make the experience easy to understand, visually clear, age-appropriate and forgiving.
Instructions should be short and understandable. Children should not be pressured into sharing information or weakening privacy protections.
Accessibility
GrandpaSpy Junior is designed to include accessibility features including a Dyslexia Reading Mode and Reduced Motion option.
Junior Agent Training
What Junior Agents Can Do
GrandpaSpy Junior uses games, missions and challenges to develop five core skills:
Junior agents can complete missions, solve puzzles, earn local progress and replay activities.
Real-World Spy Safety
Think Like a Spy. Don't Behave Like One.
GrandpaSpy is about developing the mindset and thinking skills associated with intelligence work.
It is not about children behaving like real intelligence officers.
- follow strangers
- enter private property
- secretly photograph people
- interfere with other people's belongings
- arrange meetings with strangers
- put themselves or anyone else in danger
- keep unsafe secrets from parents, carers or trusted adults
A GrandpaSpy mission should stay a game.
If a mission inspires a child to try an activity away from the screen, normal family rules and adult supervision still apply.
Commercial Content
Junior Comes First
GrandpaSpy may work with commercial partners elsewhere across the wider GrandpaSpy project.
GrandpaSpy Junior does not contain clickable sponsor links, shopping links or calls to purchase.
A Junior mission will not require a child to buy something, ask a parent to buy something, provide personal information or interact with advertising in order to progress.
Website Technology
Cookies & Browser Storage
Like other websites, GrandpaSpy may need some technical information or browser storage to operate securely and correctly.
GrandpaSpy Junior may use local browser storage for features such as mission progress, badges, accessibility preferences and settings.
Our Privacy Notice and Cookie Notice explain the technologies used across the website and how they are handled.
Safeguarding
Designed With Children in Mind
GrandpaSpy Junior is designed with children's safeguarding in mind.
Content is reviewed before publication and the Junior experience is deliberately designed without private child-to-child communication, public uploads or open messaging.
We aim to follow established child-focused editorial and safeguarding principles when developing content for younger users.
Parents Remain in Control
We encourage parents and carers to explore GrandpaSpy Junior with their children.
You can ask your child what missions they have completed, discuss what they learned and use activities as a starting point for conversations about:
- privacy
- online safety
- misinformation
- observation
- evidence
- trust
- good judgement
